Overview

The J&A Residence is a residential design project in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood, designed by interior designer Tanya Lukezic.

The project focused on bringing together the existing character of the home with carefully considered contemporary design elements. Through a collaborative design-build process, older architectural details were integrated with modern finishes, furnishings, and interior detailing to create a cohesive living environment.

My role was to photograph the completed residence in a way that communicated both the overall spatial experience and the details that defined the design.

Photography Objective

The goal was to create a visual record of the residence that could communicate the designer’s approach through space, material, and atmosphere.

The photography needed to:

  • Show the flow and relationship between rooms
  • Highlight the integration of original architectural elements with modern design
  • Capture materials, finishes, and interior details
  • Present the home as a cohesive design project
  • Create polished imagery suitable for portfolio and design promotion

The Challenge

Photographing residential interiors requires more than simply documenting individual rooms. The images need to communicate how spaces connect and how design decisions work together throughout the home.

The key challenges included:

  • Maintaining a sense of spatial scale and proportion
  • Balancing natural light across different rooms
  • Capturing both wide architectural views and intimate design details
  • Preserving the warmth and lived-in character of the residence
  • Creating a consistent visual story across the full image collection

Photography Approach

Spatial Composition

I used carefully considered perspectives to communicate the relationship between rooms and the overall flow of the residence.

Compositions focused on:

  • Architectural lines and structure
  • Depth and spatial relationships
  • Transitions between rooms
  • The relationship between built elements, furnishings, and negative space

Rather than treating each room as an isolated subject, the photography was approached as a cohesive visual journey through the home.

Working with Natural Light

The photography relied primarily on available natural light to preserve the warmth and atmosphere of the interiors.

Exposure and framing were adjusted to:

  • Maintain visual balance across rooms
  • Preserve the character of natural light
  • Highlight materials and textures
  • Represent the colour and atmosphere of the space accurately

Wide Views & Design Details

The final collection balanced larger architectural perspectives with closer details.

Wide images communicate:
