Overview / Context

The J&A Residence is a residential design project located in Toronto’s Beaches neighbourhood, designed by interior designer Tanya Lukezic. The project focused on carefully integrating new design elements with the existing architecture of the home.

The renovation approached the home with the goal of unifying older structural elements with modern interior detailing. Through a collaborative design-build process between designer and contractor, the home was transformed into a refined living environment that balances contemporary finishes with traditional architectural character.

My role as photographer was to document the completed interior spaces and highlight the thoughtful design decisions that shaped the residence.

Photography Objectives

The primary goal of the photography project was to visually communicate the architectural and interior design concept of the home.

Key objectives included:

  • Capture the spatial flow and layout of the residence

  • Highlight the relationship between modern additions and original architecture

  • Emphasize materials, finishes, and interior design details

  • Produce professional architectural imagery suitable for portfolio documentation and design promotion

The Challenge

Architectural photography requires careful attention to spatial balance and visual clarity. Key challenges included:

  • Maintaining accurate architectural proportions when photographing interior spaces

  • Balancing natural lighting conditions across multiple rooms

  • Capturing both wide architectural perspectives and detailed design elements

  • Preserving the warmth and atmosphere of the home while ensuring accurate color representation

Photography Approach

Perspective & Composition

Interior spaces were photographed using compositions that emphasize:

  • architectural lines and structure

  • depth and spatial relationships

  • the natural flow between rooms

Angles were carefully selected to present each space clearly while maintaining natural visual proportions.

Lighting Awareness

The photography relied primarily on available natural light to maintain the warmth and atmosphere of the interior spaces.

Exposure and framing were adjusted to:

  • maintain balanced lighting across rooms

  • highlight textures and materials

  • preserve the natural mood of the home

Detail-Oriented Documentation

In addition to wide architectural views, the photography captured close-up details such as:

  • finishes and materials

  • furnishings and interior accents

  • architectural features and design elements

These images complement the larger spatial views and help communicate the designer’s attention to detail

Visual Storytelling

The final image collection was designed to present the residence as a cohesive visual narrative, reflecting the designer’s vision of blending modern detailing with traditional architecture.

Execution / Deliverables

The photography session focused on documenting key areas of the residence, including:

  • main living spaces

  • transitional areas between rooms

  • architectural perspectives and structural features

  • interior design details and materials

Post-production included:

  • colour correction for accurate material representation

  • balanced exposure across interior images

  • visual consistency across the final curated collection

Outcome / Impact

The final image collection successfully captured the architectural character and interior design vision of the residence.

The photographs provide:

  • professional documentation of the residential design project

  • portfolio imagery demonstrating architectural photography expertise

  • visual storytelling of the home’s design concept

Through thoughtful composition and attention to detail, the photography highlights the warmth, craftsmanship, and architectural integrity of the J&A Residence.

Reflection

Architectural photography requires balancing technical precision with visual storytelling. This project reinforced the importance of composition, lighting awareness, and spatial perspective when documenting designed environments.

The J&A Residence project expanded my portfolio in architectural and interior design photography, demonstrating the ability to visually communicate the relationship between architecture, materials, and lived space.
