Overview / Context
In 2019, I photographed a one-time live performance featuring Mila Thyme and Xoana in Toronto.
The intimate show created a unique live music experience centred on the energy of the performers and their connection with the audience. Because the performance was a one-night event, there was no opportunity to recreate moments or repeat key shots.
My goal was to create a visual record that captured the emotion, movement, and atmosphere of the performance—from expressive moments on stage to the energy of the audience.
Photography Objective
The project focused on documenting the unique character of the performance while creating imagery suitable for promotional and archival use.
The photography objectives were to:
- Capture the performers’ energy and stage presence
- Document authentic moments of movement and emotion
- Show the relationship between performers and audience
- Work with the venue’s lighting to preserve the atmosphere of the event
- Produce high-quality images for promotion, social media, and portfolio use
The Challenge
Live performance photography requires making fast creative and technical decisions in constantly changing conditions.
The main challenges included:
- Capturing fast-moving performers in low-light conditions
- Working with changing stage lighting and colour
- Anticipating key moments during a one-time performance
- Balancing technical precision with spontaneous visual storytelling
- Capturing both the performers’ energy and the intimate atmosphere of the event
The challenge was to preserve the uniqueness of the performance through images that felt immediate, authentic, and emotionally engaging.
Photography Approach
Observational & Candid Photography
I focused on capturing authentic moments as they unfolded, including performer interactions, expressions, movement, and audience reactions.
Rather than treating the performance as a series of posed portraits, the photography was approached as a visual record of the experience.
Dynamic Composition
Angles, timing, and framing were used to emphasize movement and stage presence. Compositions were selected to capture both the individuality of the performers and the energy of the performance as a whole.
Working with Low-Light Conditions
Changing stage lighting required constant adaptation throughout the performance. Camera settings and positioning were adjusted to preserve colour, atmosphere, and detail while working within the technical limitations of the venue.
Storytelling Through Performance
The final images were selected to communicate the progression and feeling of the event—from expressive moments on stage to the connection between the performers and audience.

Reflection
Photographing a one-time performance requires a balance of preparation, anticipation, and responsiveness. Every moment happens only once, making timing and observation essential to the process.
This project reinforced my ability to work in changing low-light environments while focusing on authentic emotion, movement, and atmosphere.
It also strengthened my approach to live performance photography as a form of visual storytelling—capturing not only what happened on stage, but also the feeling of being present in the room.
