Overview / Context
I photographed the Odd Ones EP Release Show at Hard Luck Bar in Toronto, documenting an evening of live performances featuring Odd Ones, Redhanded Daniel, and Uforia.
The show brought together the intensity of live performance, the intimacy of a small venue, and the energy of Toronto’s underground music scene. My goal was to create a visual record of the event that captured more than the performances themselves—from the movement and emotion on stage to the connection between artists, audience, and venue.
The resulting images were designed to communicate the atmosphere of the show while providing promotional and archival photography for the artists and event.
Photography Objective
The project focused on capturing the energy and atmosphere of a one-night live music event.
The photography objectives were to:
- Document the performances and individual artists
- Capture authentic moments of movement, emotion, and stage presence
- Show the relationship between performers and the audience
- Communicate the atmosphere of the venue and the event
- Create imagery suitable for promotion, social media, press, and archival documentation
The Challenge
Live music photography requires making creative and technical decisions in constantly changing conditions.
The main challenges included:
- Fast-moving performers and unpredictable moments
- Low-light environments with rapidly changing stage lighting
- Limited opportunities to capture key moments during a one-night performance
- Balancing technical exposure and focus with spontaneous visual storytelling
- Capturing both the intensity of the performers and the atmosphere of the audience
The challenge was to create images that felt immediate and authentic while maintaining enough technical control to produce a cohesive final collection.
Photography Approach
Working in Low-Light Conditions
The changing lighting conditions of the venue required constant adjustment throughout the performances. Camera settings and positioning were adapted to maintain detail, atmosphere, and colour across different lighting environments.
Capturing Movement & Performance
Rather than relying only on posed or static images, I focused on moments of movement, gesture, expression, and interaction. These moments helped communicate the intensity and individuality of each performance.
Balancing Stage & Audience Perspectives
The visual story extended beyond the performers. Audience reactions, crowd energy, and the relationship between the stage and the room helped establish the atmosphere of the event.
Focusing on Emotion & Stage Presence
Close-up images focused on facial expressions, gestures, and moments of concentration or intensity. These details helped create a more personal connection to the performers.
Building a Visual Narrative
The final image selection was approached as a visual record of the night—from the energy of individual performances to the atmosphere of the crowd and venue.

Outcome & Impact
The project resulted in a curated photographic record of a high-energy live music event.
The images:

- Strengthened my portfolio in live music and concert photography
The project demonstrated my ability to work quickly and creatively in challenging low-light environments while maintaining a strong focus on storytelling and authentic moments.
Reflection
Live music photography requires a balance between preparation and responsiveness. The photographer needs to anticipate moments while remaining open to the unexpected—often working within difficult lighting conditions and with only a fraction of a second to capture an image.
This project reinforced my ability to work in fast-paced live environments and strengthened my approach to photographing movement, emotion, and atmosphere.
The experience also reinforced the importance of photographing the entire environment of a performance. The story of a live show exists not only on stage, but also in the audience, the venue, and the connection between them.
