Overview / Context

Winterhouse Films is a creative studio focused on film production and visual storytelling. The studio required a website that could clearly present its film portfolio while communicating its creative identity and services.

The primary goal of the project was to design a website that balances visual storytelling with usability, allowing visitors to explore film projects while maintaining an immersive, cinematic experience.

The site needed to function as both a portfolio platform and a brand experience, highlighting the studio’s work while remaining simple and intuitive to navigate.

Project Objectives

The main goals for the website design included:

  • Showcase the studio’s film portfolio through visual storytelling

  • Organize projects in a clear and accessible structure

  • Reflect the cinematic identity of the studio

  • Maintain a minimal interface that allows visual content to dominate

The Challenge

Film studios rely heavily on visual content to present their work, but many production websites struggle with usability.

Key design challenges included:

  • Presenting video-based content in a clear and engaging format

  • Structuring film projects so they are easy to explore

  • Maintaining visual immersion without sacrificing usability

  • Communicating the studio’s creative identity through the interface

The design needed to balance minimalism and storytelling while allowing the film projects to remain the primary focus.

Research & Inspiration

To inform the design direction, I explored websites from:

  • film production studios

  • creative agencies

  • visual media portfolios

Common patterns observed included:

  • full-screen imagery and video

  • minimal navigation systems

  • bold typography

  • image-driven layouts

These insights helped guide the design approach toward a clean, cinematic interface style.

Information Architecture

The website structure was designed to allow users to explore the studio’s work quickly and intuitively.

Primary site sections included:

Home
An overview of the studio with featured projects and visual highlights.

Projects
A portfolio gallery showcasing film productions and creative work.

Team
Information about the studio, its mission, and its creative process.

Contact
A streamlined way for potential collaborators or clients to connect with the studio.

This structure ensured that visitors could quickly understand the studio and explore its work.

Design Approach

Minimal Interface Design

A restrained interface was used to allow visual content to remain the focal point of the site. Navigation and UI elements were intentionally minimal to avoid distracting from the film projects.

Visual Hierarchy

Typography and layout were designed to guide users naturally through the site. Large titles, clear spacing, and structured layouts help emphasize film projects while maintaining readability.

Image & Video Driven Layout

Large imagery and cinematic stills were used throughout the site to create an immersive experience. This approach highlights the studio’s creative work while reinforcing the visual storytelling aspect of film production.

Execution / Deliverables

The project included the design of key website components such as:

  • Homepage layout and featured project sections

  • Film project portfolio pages

  • Studio information and about pages

  • Contact interface for potential clients

The final deliverables included:

  • UX wireframes outlining page structure

  • high-fidelity visual interface designs

  • layout concepts for project showcase pages

Outcome / Impact

The final design presents Winterhouse Films as a modern creative studio while allowing the studio’s film work to remain the central focus.

The website design provides:

  • clear and intuitive navigation

  • visually engaging presentation of film projects

  • a cohesive digital identity for the studio

By prioritizing simplicity and visual storytelling, the website effectively communicates the studio’s creative approach.

Reflection

This project reinforced the importance of designing portfolio-driven websites that support the content rather than compete with it.

For creative studios, the interface should act as a framework for storytelling, allowing the work itself to take center stage.

The final design balances minimal interface design with cinematic presentation, creating a digital experience that highlights the studio’s film projects clearly and effectively.
